This is the first time I’ve ever known a book was going to be five stars for me within ten minutes of starting the book。 This is a must read for everyone。 I don’t think there is a person out there who would not love Adam Kay’s writing, wit and incredible stories 。 First and foremost, it’s hilarious beyond belief but it’s also so very real and there were a few moments that I cried。 Without a doubt, this will be one of my top reads of the year! Couldn’t recommend it more highly!!!

This is a book that I read very quickly 。 I read it quickly because I was fascinated by the subject matter, I empathised totally with the writer, the style was punchy and there was humour to balance out some of the horrendous recollections and anecdotes that are in it。 The story of how one man went through the rigours of medical training ( or not , in some circumstances) made me want to laugh, cry and sometimes to lash out at the establishment。 The stories and diary notes are all pointed and som This is a book that I read very quickly 。 I read it quickly because I was fascinated by the subject matter, I empathised totally with the writer, the style was punchy and there was humour to balance out some of the horrendous recollections and anecdotes that are in it。 The story of how one man went through the rigours of medical training ( or not , in some circumstances) made me want to laugh, cry and sometimes to lash out at the establishment。 The stories and diary notes are all pointed and some actually did make me laugh out loud。 Even having decided that medical practice is no longer for him the writer still retains his love for humanity that is so very visible as you read his story。 This is a very poignant book and one that I will remember for a long time 。 The book deserves the Book of The Year awards that it was given and I would recommend it to everyone。。。。。 。。。more

A fantastic, humorous, and gut-wrenching insight of what it’s like to work in the NHS。 I recommend the audio book for Kay’s brilliant narration。

It's 4。5。 It's funny and a light read。 I always read this on the train because it's a diary - short stories of doctor's life。 I think i would rate it 5 if i'm in medical field because maybe it would feel more relatable。0 It's 4。5。 It's funny and a light read。 I always read this on the train because it's a diary - short stories of doctor's life。 I think i would rate it 5 if i'm in medical field because maybe it would feel more relatable。0 。。。more

Really funny throughout and at times heartbreaking。 Also it was fascinating to learn of all the medical lingo and horror stories that a health care professional must come across during their career

A mostly fun read, but more importantly a valuable contribution to a necessary discussion about the working conditions of junior doctors, and other healthcare workers。

So wonderfully written。 For most part, I laughed my ass off! There were moments where I literally had to keep the book down because I just couldn't stop myself from laughing! I literally thought the name was a mismatch until I arrived at that one point ( to know that point,Read the book you curious one!! ) when I realised how accurate the name was。 Yes, indeed it hurts。 。。。more

Over a year ago, after a 14-hour-labour, I, at the brink of falling asleep, looked up and saw an equally exhausted doctor whose face was covered in my blood and probably overstayed the end of her 12-hour shift, congratulating and praising me what a good job I had done。 The next night, I witnessed a patient in the ward complaining that the medical staff was being arrogant because they refused to change her baby’s nappy as if they had more important stuff to attend to。I always wondered why would a Over a year ago, after a 14-hour-labour, I, at the brink of falling asleep, looked up and saw an equally exhausted doctor whose face was covered in my blood and probably overstayed the end of her 12-hour shift, congratulating and praising me what a good job I had done。 The next night, I witnessed a patient in the ward complaining that the medical staff was being arrogant because they refused to change her baby’s nappy as if they had more important stuff to attend to。I always wondered why would anyone goes into this profession for so little pay and so little respect, if it was not for the love and passion。 So many moments in this book reminds me of my limited interaction with the hospital, the maternity ward, the medical staff, and the NHS in general。Really witty, funny, heart-breaking。 I was almost ignoring my most precious toddler in order to finish the next chapter。 。。。more

This is Going to Hurt is a memoir/diary entry format of former Dr。 Adam Kay’s experience as an OBGYN and in the ER。 Definite trigger warning for miscarriage and some heavier procedures。 At the same time there are lots of lighter moments and funny anecdotes of things patients have asked or done。I really really love this book and it’s now in my top books。 Page 2 I was already spitting my coffee out as I read the page! Adam Kay lets us look at the behind the scenes of a life of a tired doctor, through his eye opening notes。 It is crazy how we often forget that doctors are people too, they have their own lives and maybe they're missing an important event right now, because there was no one who would cover their shift。 He describes how there's not enough workers in the hospitals, how those who work there, die from exhaustion daily and also the tendency to leave the responsibility on others, with a bit of cynicis Adam Kay lets us look at the behind the scenes of a life of a tired doctor, through his eye opening notes。 It is crazy how we often forget that doctors are people too, they have their own lives and maybe they're missing an important event right now, because there was no one who would cover their shift。 He describes how there's not enough workers in the hospitals, how those who work there, die from exhaustion daily and also the tendency to leave the responsibility on others, with a bit of cynicism and irony。 His notes prove what many think; Being a doctor is no mission, it is a job。 Maybe a little different and special, but still。 Even though there were parts that literally made me laugh, there were also some that were clear expression of frustration and desperation。 This book definitely made me rethink everything。 My life, my future, the whole system。。。 I don't look at doctors the way I did anymore。 Written in a great way and pleasure to read! 。。。more

What a lovely book。 I laughed, I cried and discovered a newfound respect for the NHS and the work they do。 A tremendously honest point of view from a doctor who worked in the labour wards, recalls his experiences of his time working for the NHS。 Adam has a funny and witty way of writing, in which I was enthralled the whole way throughout。 I look forward to reading his sequel 'twas the night before Christmas'。 What a lovely book。 I laughed, I cried and discovered a newfound respect for the NHS and the work they do。 A tremendously honest point of view from a doctor who worked in the labour wards, recalls his experiences of his time working for the NHS。 Adam has a funny and witty way of writing, in which I was enthralled the whole way throughout。 I look forward to reading his sequel 'twas the night before Christmas'。 。。。more

This was pretty interesting, although was a bit confused about some of the position terms since they're different in the UK than in Canada (as expected)。 But I love these behind the scenes views of professions。 As someone who could never go into medicine, it's interesting to learn about what being a doctor/gynecologist is like。 I know it's a difficult profession and I sincerely hope the NHS has improved the disparities and unfair expectations doctors face that Kay describes in detail in the book This was pretty interesting, although was a bit confused about some of the position terms since they're different in the UK than in Canada (as expected)。 But I love these behind the scenes views of professions。 As someone who could never go into medicine, it's interesting to learn about what being a doctor/gynecologist is like。 I know it's a difficult profession and I sincerely hope the NHS has improved the disparities and unfair expectations doctors face that Kay describes in detail in the book。 。。。more
